Missionary Profile

Profile: Evan Wheeler

DOB: July, 1989

Nationality: US Citizen

Brief Testimony: Being raised in an independent Baptist church I had always knew what the Bible taught about the basics of who Jesus was, who God was and what He wanted from man. Although I confessed faith at a young age (around 12 years of age) I was never born again. I lived a terrible lifestyle up until age 19, when God convicted me and drew me to Him. After reading my Bible, studying, discussing theology and applying what I had learned, God connected me with an evangelistic church. I learned most of my evangelistic methods first-hand from that church and since have had a passion for street preaching and teaching God’s Word.

Education: I graduated from high school in 2008 and immediately enrolled into technical college for computer programming. After about 2-3 years of flip-flopping between majors, I dropped out to pursue a seminary level education, in which I now attend The North American Reformed Seminary (www.tnars.net).

Below are relevant topics to inform you of what I believe if you’re considering supporting my missions.

Street Preaching: Is it effective?

This is a very common question. At the get-go I’m going to point you towards a book titled, “Evangelism in the New Testament: A Plea for Biblically Relevant Evangelism” by Jon Speed.  For a more historical perspective read what Charles H. Spurgeon has said on the matter

“I am persuaded that the more of open air preaching there is in London the-better, if it should become a nuisance to some it will be a blessing to others, if properly conducted.” http://www.soulwinning.info/sp/sp-spurgeon.htm

Below of some lengthy passages of Scripture, pointing out the call for the prophets, disciples and apostles to go out into the street and publically preach repentance and faith.

Ezekial
“And he said to me, "Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.' And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been among them. And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions. Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. And you shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house. “ Ezekial 2:3-7 ESV

Jeremiah
“And the Lord said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and do them. 7 For I solemnly warned your fathers when I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, warning them persistently, even to this day, saying, Obey my voice. 8  Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not."” Jeremiah 11:6-8
Isaiah
Isa 58:1 ESV
"Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins.”
The Disciples
Mark 16:15-17 ESV
15 And he said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.  16  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Below is a lengthy defense to common objections that street preachers get.

Objections
·         “This method does not work and actually pushes people away from Christ.”
o   I would argue that the same ratio of people are rejected from the true gospel and call to repentance, regardless of method. The Biblical model has always been public preaching and the same results the prophets got are the same results true messengers of the Word get today.

·         “The apostles in the NT did not go out into the streets and shout at people.” In this passage of Acts 3:11-4:4 we can see the content of Peter’s message as well as how many were listening.
o   “While he clung to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's, astounded. 12 And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: "Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. 14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16 And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all." And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. 22 Moses said, 'The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. 23 And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.' 24 And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days. 25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.' 26 God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness." And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.”

o   We can see from this historical account of Peter speaking to his fellow Jews, the outline of a gospel presentation.
§  “And when Peter saw he addressed the people” Peter was aware that he drew a crowd, so he took that opportunity of having the large crowd at attention to proclaim the gospel, the Great Commission which was commanded from Christ Himself.
§   Peter told them that Jesus was the “Author of Life”.
§  He commanded that they repent so that they would have forgiveness of sins. “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out,”.
§  He told of the consequences of rejecting Jesus, “And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people
§  We see at the end of his preaching that Peter spoke to a very large crowd so we cannot say that Peter took the soothing voice approach, “But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand”.

·         So should we open air preach today?
o   America is a nation gone astray. We cannot change hearts through morals, political change or any other law. We need the work of the Holy Spirit and the preaching of the Word. We need to call out sin, just as the prophets did, and command men to repent. If we deny open air street preaching, then we would consistently deny missionaries. Paul Washer has said something very revealing about open air preaching and missions, “

Statement of Faith:

1729 Goat Yard Declaration of Faith

A Declaration of the Faith and Practice
of the Church of Christ at Horsely-down,
under the Pastoral Care of Mr. John Gill, &c.
Prelude

Having been enabled, through divine grace, to give up ourselves to the Lord, and likewise to one another by the will of God; we account it a duty incumbent upon us to make a declaration of our faith and practice, to the honour of Christ, and the glory of his name; knowing, that as with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, so with the mouth confession is made unto salvation--our declaration is as follows:

Declaration of Faith

I. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the word of God, and the only rule of faith and practice.

II. We believe that there is but one only living and true God; that there are three Persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, who are equal in nature, power, and glory; and that the Son and the Holy Ghost are as truly and as properly God as the Father.

III. We believe that, before the world began, God did elect a certain number of men unto everlasting salvation, whom he did predestinate to the adoption of children by Jesus Christ, of his own free grace, and according to the good pleasure of his will: and that, in pursuance of this gracious design, he did contrive and make a covenant of grace and peace with his Son Jesus Christ, on the behalf of those persons, wherein a Saviour was appointed, and all spiritual blessings provided for them; as also that their persons, with all their grace and glory, were put into the hands of Christ, and made his care and charge.

IV. We believe that God created the first man, Adam, after his own image, and in his likeness; an upright, holy, and innocent creature, capable of serving and glorifying him; but, he sinning, all his posterity sinned in him, and came short of the glory of God: the guilt of whose sin is imputed, and a corrupt nature derived, to all his offspring, descending from him by ordinary and natural generation: that they are by their first birth carnal and unclean, averse to all that is good, uncapable of doing any and prone to every sin; and are also by nature children of wrath, and under a sentence of condemnation, and so are subject not only to a corporal death, and involved in a moral one, commonly called spiritual, but are also liable to an eternal death, as considered in the first Adam, fallen and sinners; from all which there is no deliverance but by Christ, the second Adam.

V. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, being set up from everlasting as the Mediator of the new covenant, and he, having engaged to be the surety of his people, did, in the fulness of time, really assume human nature, and not before, neither in whole nor in part; his human soul, being a creature, existed not from eternity, but was created and formed in his body by him that forms the spirit of man within him, when that was conceived in the womb of the virgin; and so his human nature consists of a true body and a reasonable soul; both which, together, and at once, the Son of God assumed into union with his divine Person, when made of a woman, and not before; in which nature he really suffered and died as their substitute, in their room and stead, whereby he made all that satisfaction for their sins, which the law and justice of God could require, as well as made way for all those blessings, which are needful for them both for time and eternity.

VI. We believe that that eternal redemption which Christ has obtained, by the shedding of his blood, is special and particular, that is to say, that it was only intentionally designed for the elect of God, and sheep of Christ, who only share the special and peculiar blessings of it.

VII. We believe that the justification of God's elect is only by the righteousness of Christ imputed to them, without the consideration of any works of righteousness done by them; and that the full and free pardon of all their sins and transgressions, past, present, and to come, is only through the blood of Christ, according to the riches of his grace.

VIII. We believe that the work of regeneration, conversion, sanctification, and faith, is not an act of man's free will and power, but of the mighty, efficacious, and irresistible grace of God.

IX. We believe that all those who are chosen by the Father, redeemed by the Son, and sanctified by the Spirit, shall certainly and finally persevere, so that not one of them shall ever perish, but shall have everlasting life.

X. We believe that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust; and that Christ will come a second time to judge both quick and dead, when he will take vengeance on the wicked, and introduce his own people into his kingdom and glory, where they shall be for ever with him.

XI. We believe that Baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances of Christ, to be continued until his second coming; and that the former is absolutely requisite to the latter; that is to say, that those only are to be admitted into the communion of the church, and to participate of all ordinances in it, who upon profession of their faith, have been baptized by immersion, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

XII. We also believe that singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, vocally, is an ordinance of the Gospel to be performed by believers; but that as to time, place, and manner, every one ought to be left to their liberty in using it.

Postlude

Now all, and each of these doctrines and ordinances, we look upon ourselves under the greatest obligations to embrace, maintain, and defend; believing it to be our duty to stand fast, in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the Gospel.

And whereas we are very sensible, that our conversation, both in the world and in the church, ought to be as becometh the Gospel of Christ, we judge it our incumbent duty to walk in wisdom towards them that are without, to exercise a conscience void of offence towards God and men, by living soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.

And as to our regards to each other, in our church-communion, we esteem it our duty to walk with each other in all humility and brotherly love: to watch over each other's conversation; to stir up one another to love and good works; not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as we have opportunity, to worship God according to his revealed will; and, when the case requires, to warn, rebuke, and admonish one another, according to the rules of the Gospel.

Moreover, we think ourselves obliged to sympathize with each other, in all conditions, both inward and outward, which God, in his providence, may bring us into; as also to bear with one another's weaknesses, failings, and infirmities, and particularly to pray for one another, and that the Gospel and the ordinances thereof might be blessed to the edification and comfort of each other's souls, and for the gathering in of others to Christ, besides those who are already gathered--all which duties we desire to be found in the performance of, through the gracious assistance of the Holy Spirit, whilst we both admire and adore the grace which has given us a place and a name in God's house, better than that of sons and daughters.
Conclusion:
I greatly appreciate the time you’ve taken to go through my profile and make your donation to the cause of spreading the gospel and saving the souls of men. The donor makes the mission possible by sending us what we need to sustain ourselves while we fight the battle on another front. I greatly appreciate what you have done for the sake of Christ. I would like to close with some financial principles from Heart Cry Missionary Society that I am in full agreement with. God bless.
Every need of this ministry will be obtained through prayer. We may share our missionary vision with others and even make known to them the specific tasks which the Lord has laid on our heart to do, but we may not raise support through prodding or manipulating our brothers and sisters in Christ. If this ministry is of the Lord, then He will be our Patron. If He is with us, He will direct His people to give and we will prosper. If He is not with us, we will not and should not succeed.
We intend to never enlarge our field of labor by contracting debts. This is contrary to both the letter and the spirit of the New Testament. In secret prayer, God helping us, we will carry the needs of this ministry to the Lord and act according to the direction that He gives.
We will not compete with other biblical mission agencies, but will use the resources that God has given to us to work in partnership with them. If the Lord directs, we will sacrifice our own goals and resources that other mission works may be helped and the Kingdom of God increased.
The staff that is employed full-time in this ministry is worthy of their labor. They should be afforded that which is required to live with dignity and to demonstrate that the Lord is gracious to supply the needs of His servants. To neglect their welfare would give excuse for the ungodly to bring unjust accusations against the Lord that He is either uncaring or unable to meet the needs of His servants. Those whom this ministry supports shall not be given so much as to waste the Lord’s resources, acquire luxury, or live above those who so graciously give to the Lord’s work. To seek wealth and luxury in the ministry is to deny the call.
We will not measure the success of this ministry by the amount of money given, Bibles distributed, or national missionaries supported, but by the Lord’s blessing on the work.
Our Goal is not to enlarge ourselves, or to become a key figure in the Great Commission, but to be faithful and obedient stewards by the grace that is given to us. Our only vision is the crucified, risen, and exalted Christ.”
